Molerat 2.0 first draft passes 70K

Lee Gabel

So I've done it again. I aim for a word count target and I overshoot it. But it's not on purpose, I swear.

Whenever I begin a novel, I aim for a 70,000 word first draft. I outline but I'm not set in stone regarding events. Often situations arise, often caused by characters doing their own thing in the story, and I need to veer off the agreed path. It's usually fine as long as I can keep the characters satisfied as well as get them back on track. Molerat 2.0 (Detest-A-Pest #3) is moving along at a respectable pace, and this January I increased my daily word count goal from 1,000 to 1,500. For the past two weeks it's been working. That dip in December was two weeks over Christmas and New Year and I was powerless to stop it. 😉

If I were to guess how long the first draft of Molerat 2.0 will end up, I'd say between 90K and 100K words. But it will be anyone's guess considering Arachnid 2.0 ended up at a published length of 135K words. Time will tell! 😊👍
